5/3/2016 0 Comments Final Reveal -- 4The Key has lots of “hidden” things. The throne in the final scene is loosely taken from Revelation in the Bible. The dark and light gryphons are representative of—you guessed it—angels! In the Bible a 1/3 of the angels fall with Lucifer and in the Secret Defenders series a 1/3 of the gray gryphons fall with Cahal.

4/26/2016 0 Comments Reveal Tuesday -- 3!Last week I revealed what started The Key, this week we’re going to talk names.
When I wrote The Key I wanted everything to hold significance. The tower’s location in Ireland helped with the names. I knew what I wanted the names to mean so I chose based on that. Let me share the scene whenthe kids discover what there names mean. Scene: The history teacher, Mr. Stanley, sat atop his desk and drummed his fingers on the sides. “Today we’re going to discuss names and their meanings. Let’s start with you, Felicity. Do you know the meaning of your name?” “Nope,” she said, smacking at a large wad of gum. Mr. Stanley drummed again, leaned forward, and opened his hand, palm up. Felicity spit out the glob and shot him a goofy grin. He deposited it in the trashcan and retrieved a cleansing wipe from his desk. Wiping his hands and ignoring the class’s verbal disgust, he said, “Your name comes from the English. It means happy or happiness.” “Cool.” He rolled his eyes. “Yes, of course, cool.” He shifted target and pointed. “Now, Marley, your name is also from the English vernacular and it means pleasant wood.” Light laughter filled the room and Mr. Stanley cleared his throat. Everyone hushed. “Stephanie, your name is from the Greek.” Preening, Stephanie faced the class. “You hear that, guys? I’m Greek. I wear long togas and golden leaves on my head.” Comments were made under students’ breath — Chase privately agreed with them but refused to listen too closely — and Mr. Stanley shook his head in agitation. “Your name means…” he paused and grimaced, “…crown.” “I always knew I was a queen,” said Stephanie, primping her hair. Working his way around the room, Mr. Stanley revealed each student’s name, its meaning, and where it hailed from. When he reached the last row, Dougal leaned back and crossed his legs at the ankles. “Dougal Lachlan. A rich Irish name. Dougal means black stranger and Lachlan means lord of the lochs.” Mr. Stanley arched a brow as if he expected a comeback. When none was given, he adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, straightened his bow tie, and moved on. “Well, then, I guess you youngsters don’t find that interesting. What about this one? Chase, your three names are English, French, and Irish. I guess you couldn’t have one origin.” He snickered, but the meaning was lost on Chase, and he lifted his eyebrows. Mr. Stanley straightened his face and cleared his throat. “Anyway, your first name is Alexander, which means defender of mankind. Chase means huntsman, and Donovan means dark chieftain. A dark hunting chieftain that defends mankind. You’re a paradox, aren’t you?” Stephanie and her crew snickered and Mr. Stanley finally relaxed; hey, someone listened. Emboldened, he clapped his hands and drummed again. “And last but not least, Maddie. Your name is also Irish in origin. Madelyn means high tower and Clevenger means keeper of the keys. I guess that would mean you are the key keeper for a high tower.” The class erupted in laughter. Next week join me for the final reveal. “I won’t date a guy who drives an ugly truck.” Yup, that was the sentence, phrase, thought, that stated it all. So I guess Stephanie is the main character—Not! Anyway, I’ve told this story before but my cousin, my poor cousin, had a very attractive young man ask her on a date, but there was a problem—he drove a Ford Grenada. My cousin considered this an ugly car and she declined his proposition. In the end the gentleman stayed handsome, joined the military, bought a Camaro, and found him another girlfriend. It’s kind of funny really. My grandmother drove a red Grenada for years—she was loved that car. When I told her one of the reasons behind the story she was a tad offended. Back to The Key...I wouldn't count on Chase receiving a nice car anytime soon, but I’d love for you to read the story and learn about his first car/truck. Sounds about right for a teenager. Join me next week when we play the Name Game. Buy Links: Amazon B&N 4/12/2016 0 Comments Reveal Tuesday!Today starts a series of reveals about my YA paranormal romance – The Key.
The Key was conceived, born, thought up--however you want to put it--around the time Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight was all the rage. The amount of vampire stories had increased. Everybody wanted to read about a vampire. I think Twilight’s success was more about the characters Meyer created than their vampire nature, but that is just me. Personally I think Meyer did a great job with the romance aspect of the story. What girl doesn’t like someone completely enamored with her. And the needed protection that allowed for the knight in shining armor routine was icing on the cake. As I said, books on the supernatural increased and at the time I thought I’d throw my own idea in the pot…hence The Key. The Key isn’t about vampires or werewolves, but it is about an overprotective young male and the girl he just can’t stop himself from loving. Next Tuesday join me to learn the one thought that started it all. 1/29/2016 0 Comments Cover Reveal!A dark power is rising, and a kingdom is in dire need of a leader when the King of the Faeries falls in battle. In January 2015 my youngest daughter was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. It started a lifestyle change that I wasn’t prepared for. We’d been peanut free for about six years, but this was a whole different ballgame. Fortunately, God had put people in our path with these same issues so we already had a support system for finding gluten free foods. What I wasn’t prepared for was the extra meal planning, the extra money required to buy the gluten free food, or the continued pain that my daughter suffers. The entire year was filled with doctors’ appointments and tests, yet still we don’t have a definitive answer to the pain. We know she has Celiac Disease. We know she doesn’t have Crohn’s Disease. She has been diagnosed with mild gastritis and lactose intolerance. We’re hoping the lactose intolerance is temporary. Testing for that will come later next week…we hope. Currently we have about six inches of snow with eight more planning to fall. I may not get out of my house until spring! But I digress… During 2015 my middle daughter also had some swallowing issues. She was diagnosed with lactose and sucrose intolerance. Could it be our gluten free lifestyle that caused this? Who knows? Anyway, she has been so good about removing sugar and milk from her diet that she lost 30 pounds! Now of course the doctors are concerned about that. Can we win? I’m beginning to wonder. While the issues with my daughters have driven most of our year, we’ve also had some other things happen. My son received his Freedom Award, which is the highest honor in Trail Life. He was honored in Washington D.C. at the Freedom First Convention. I rode the subway for the first time! We also visited the Capitol and the Washington Monument or as my daughters call it—The Big Stick. I don’t think our guide for the weekend will ever forget that one. You can see a video of the award ceremony here: https://vimeo.com/140514721 We also had the pleasure of attending the Glory to the Holy One concert in Nashville, TN. And we visited the Nashville Zoo, Washington D.C. Zoo, and the Knoxville Zoo—twice! My youngest LOVES animals. Even while all this and more was happening, I managed to publish six novellas and one novel with Dingbat Publishing. (click the covers if you're interested in reading more...you know Amazon samples and all. :) ) I’ve also continued to be a part of The Inspired Inkpot. If you’re interested in joining my shared street team on Facebook just click the picture home screen. Should be on the right hand side. I’m pretty sure I embedded a link there. I have slept since then so don’t hold me to that! As for 2016, I look forward to yet another year of writing. In fact the last book in The Board Series, The Return to Eden’s Hollow, is now available for purchase. I’m excited to be done with the series and to hear what my readers think. That part is always nerve wracking yet exciting. The good reviews give me the fuel I need to continue and the bad reviews—that are helpful and not just hurtful—help me to grow and become a better writer. My goals for 2016—which will largely depend on my family’s needs—are to finish the Secret Defenders Series, to continue the Justice and Miss Quinn Mysteries, and to start a new series. I may be stretching myself a bit. Some of these things had been planned for 2015 but I’m slowing down. Life--it happens. LuLu was of the opinion that reading the society pages was of the Devil, and Lisa took the position there was nothing wrong with it. The pastor had tried to reason with the two women using a theological explanation, but it had done no good. They were both firm in their beliefs. One said it was okay; the other that it was wrong. Wesley and Elizabeth had decided to just let them argue it out. They figured when one of them was personally convicted by Jesus, it would all work itself out. As the two ladies were going back and forth, Elizabeth spotted a new individual entering the promenade. He was tall with midnight black hair. His build was similar to that of Wesley’s, but he seemed broader in the shoulders. He sat down at a table and looked up, catching Elizabeth in the act of openly staring at him. He sent a smile in her direction, causing her to blush bright red. Her heart beat a rapid tattoo against her chest. Her throat tightened as she swallowed the food in her mouth. Now your turn! Now for my own sample from chapter seven of Emerald Street. They left the booth, and Jack said, “That was an expensive trinket.” Rory shrugged. “I have it, and Hannah deserves it.” Jack didn’t comment further as they perused the rest of the stalls. At the end of the aisle, Rory suggested they find a place to have lunch. “I know of a great little diner in Pearl Valley. Maybe Trevor would like to meet us there.” “Sure,” said Jack. They headed toward the parked truck. Jack gulped, his heart skipping a beat. He moved people aside as fast as he could. Could it be? He reached the booth and spun in a complete circle. “The lady that was just here, where did she go?” The jeweler stared at him and shrugged. He studied the crowd and whispered, “Raylyn.” Now your turn! Share those excerpts and buy links! Hadley Daniels is tired of feeling invisible. You can’t learn anything new, because all you can think about is all the fun stuff you’re going to do once you don’t have to get up at the butt crack of dawn. Summer always seems full of possibilities. Nothing exciting ever happens during the school year, but maybe, during summer vacation, you could run into a hot celebrity and he’d decide to put you in his next music video. Okay, it wasn’t like I knew anybody that happened to, but my grandparents did live next door to a former TV star, Simone Hendrickson, and Simone was discovered in an ice cream parlor one summer. Of course, she lived in L.A. at the time and was already doing plays and commercials, so the guy who discovered her had already seen her perform. But hey, it was summer, she got discovered, and that was all that mattered. Amazing stuff didn’t happen to me. You know what happened to me last summer? I stepped on a bee and had to go to the emergency room. They’re not going to make an E! True Hollywood Story out of my life. I didn’t go on exotic vacations—like today, I was being dragged along with my parents to my cousin’s graduation party. Most people waited until at least the end of May before having a grad party, but Charisma was having hers early because she was leaving on a trip to Spain. I was dreading this party because I didn’t want to listen to everybody talk about how smart and talented Charisma was—making me feel like a blob in comparison—but my mom RSVP’d even though I said I’d rather die than go. My death threats meant nothing. But still, for some strange reason, I had a feeling this summer was going to be different. ★ ★ KRYSTEN LINDSAY HAGER ★ ★ Krysten Lindsay Hager is an obsessive reader and has never met a bookstore she didn’t like.
